YDM endorses Presidential Youth Council

In a recent poll conducted by Harvard University 52% of young people believe the country is headed in the wrong direction but only 32% of young American’s believe they have a say in their government. Last week the Executive Board of the Young Democrats of Maryland voted to endorse a proposal by a coalition of youth advocate organizations for a Presidential Youth Council.

The council, once formed, would be made up of representatives between the ages of 16-24 from across the country focused on issues facing the more than 100 million young people in this country. The idea for the council is based off of the more than 400 local youth councils throughout the country and dozens employed by governors and legislatures from various states.

The Young Democrats of Maryland is excited to join the more than 75 nationwide youth organizations, including America’s Promise which was founded by General Colin Powell, to support this innovative proposal, and look forward to the resolution being drafted by our members of the Young Democrats of America’s National Committee to secure the support of our national organization.

On taxes, education, & housing...Mitt Romney out of touch with young people

Last night I sat down at my computer and completed my federal income tax returns. Like you and millions of other Americans April 16th is the day we pay the cost for living in a civilized society. Sadly enough there is one American who will not be doing what the rest of us is doing…Mitt Romney. Despite running to be President of the United States and the leader of our government, Mitt Romney has filed for an extension on filing his return. Unlike the millions of Americans who sometime out of necessity need to ask for an extension, Mitt Romney’s request is purely political. At a time when he is still fighting for the GOP nomination from a determined field, Mitt Romney has not been able to develop a reasonable excuse for why he, a multimillionaire, should pay an effective income tax rate far below average working class Americans. What this extension shows is that once again, Mitt Romney is not like you and me.

Yesterday we also found out that even though Mitt believes President Barack Obama should reveal sensitive information that deals with the international diplomacy between worlds powers, he will not reveal his plans for how he’d run the government should he be elected. That is unless you’re a wealthy millionaire at one of his fundraisers.

In the few things we did find out from the former governor about what he’ll do in the White House young people, people of color, and poor families have a lot to worry about.

Most Americans aren’t born into a wealthy family. In fact for most American families the power of education is key to making sure their children do better than they did. If Mitt Romney was president he’d make achieving that dream harder by reducing the Department of Education or combining it with another agency. That would be a shame.

There is no other agency in the federal government that has more ability to transform communities and the lives of individuals more than this department. Children in many communities who don’t come from the stacked pockets of Mitt Romney are often told that education is the one thing no one can ever take away from you, and that it is the one way out of the “ghetto”. The department through Pell Grants and other programs are providing direct assistance and aid that not only will help America maintain her leadership role in the world, but empower young people to take control of their own destiny. What makes this situation even worse is Mitt Romney hasn’t laid out an alternative plan to reform education in America. He hasn’t released a vision for what he would do instead of what we are doing now. However he does know that this department has to go.

In the celestial navigation episode of The West Wing Secretary Deborah Leary blasted an attack from a GOP member of congress on the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as an attack on blacks. She was right and that is just what Mitt Romney did last week when he told this group of major donors that under his administration there would be no HUD. The crazy part of this entire thing is Mitt Romney’s father himself was a former secretary of the department. This is yet another example of why young people, minority communities, and poor families cannot afford a President Mitt Romney.

In communities all over the nation like my community here in Prince George’s County, the work of HUD is vitally important. With hundreds of thousands of homes here in Maryland and throughout the country either in foreclosure or facing foreclosure, American’s need the help of HUD to protect their homes. We just can’t afford the Romney proposal of allowing the bottom to fallout while his investor friends come in at a later date to take the homes off the market at a profit to them. HUD has opened the door to responsible home ownership for many young couples, minority populations, and poor families. These programs were not the cause of the housing crisis and eliminating them won’t solve the problem.

As Mitt Romney gets closer and closer to the GOP nomination one thing is clear, the more we find out about the former governor, the more we realize he is out of step and out of touch with the average working class people of this country.

Tonight thousands of young people all over Maryland came together to nominate President Barack Obama for another term as President of the United States. This year voters of all ages, particularly young voters, will have a choice between two stunningly different visions about the future of America. One of those visions is that of President Barack Obama who believes that only by working together we can build an America Built to Last. President Obama will offer America a choice to continue moving forward with revitalizing our economy while protecting and expanding the middle class, makes education reform a top priority that includes all stakeholders such as parents, students, and yes teachers. With President Obama young Marylanders know we will a fighter who will make college more affordable, and continue to expand health care coverage as he has done with the Affordable Health Care Act that gave insurance to more than 2 million uninsured college students. Young voters in Maryland who serve their country will have a Commander in Chief who has ended the war in Iraq, and will continue to draw down our forces in Afghanistan in a way that honors their sacrifice.

This vision President Obama offers is in contrast with the one the winner of tonight’s Republican Primary will offer. Mitt Romney will have many young voters looking back on the Eminem song signing will the real Mitt Romney please stand up? His shifting positions on everything from once supporting the Stimulus Act to the health care reform bill he passed as governor are in distant opposition to the man who is running for office today. If the current version of Romney was elected we’d see a rollback of decades of advancement in the areas of civil rights, women’s rights, and patient rights as he appeals to the far right of his party. Maryland has only maintained our record education investments because of a strong federal partner in the White House, under Mitt Romney we’d lose that partner and students would suffer. His plan to cut Pell Grants would cause college tuition to put a great education out of reach for more Americans, and his pledge to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act would put millions of young people out of reach of the coverage they need.

Young people know that President Obama has been a great champion for our generation, and the Young Democrats of Maryland look forward to making that case to our peers this November.

While we applaud the grassroots campaign Senator C. Anthony Muse ran, we also want to congratulate Senator Ben Cardin on being nominated for a second term in the US Senate. We have seen in the House of Representatives and even more in the Commonwealth of Virginia what happens when the far right takes over government. Protecting our majority in the Senate is of the utmost priority for the Young Democrats of Maryland.

As we fight to protect the majority in the Senate, President Obama needs a Democratic Congress, and putting Roscoe Bartlett in retirement and replacing him with a Democrat will be a key focus of the Young Democrats of Maryland over the next few weeks. We congratulate John Delany on his victory in tonight’s primary. John’s message of job creation and opportunity is defiantly one that young voters in the 6^th Congressional District will respond well to.

As we congratulate John we also want to applaud the aggressive campaigns of State Senator Rob Garagiola, Charles Bailey, Ron Little, and Dr. Milad Pooran. They all ran campaigns that truly represented the values of the Democratic Party and we applaud their efforts. Now is a time when all Democrats must come together in an effort to bring change to the 6^th Congressional District and make our friend and native son Steny Hoyer the majority leader once again.

GOP budget is unserious and dangerous for young people

There should be no mistake about it, the federal budget announced this week by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) and approved by his committee yesterday would be horrible for young people if it was to become law.

Under the Paul Ryan budget plan the largest share of cuts would be $1.5 trillion from the Affordable Care Act President Obama signed into law a year ago tomorrow. Since the bill passed it has already been shown to improve the lives of America’s young people by enabling college students to stay on their parents insurance until they are 26, ensuring that if you get stricken with a disease like I have (cancer) your insurance company cannot drop you or refuse to take you, and most importantly if you don’t have insurance or are self-employed, by 2014 you will be able to purchase insurance through a national marketplace system. Americans going to the marketplace for insurance will have the ability to compare programs and find the one that fits into their price range. It is not the single-payer system that many progressives would’ve wanted, but it represents a huge victory in the forty-year struggle for affordable healthcare that we can build on. The Ryan plan demolishes those building blocks and if Paul Ryan and his majority get their way, the gains we have made over the last three years will all be in jeopardy.

Another large chunk of Paul Ryan’s budget cuts will be directed to Medicaid. Now you might not hear much about Medicaid because in far too many elections the largest turnout group is seniors and protecting Medicare is the rallying cry. Medicaid is the medical insurance program that provides coverage for poor women and many children. In states all over the nation, especially both here in Maryland, but even more in places like my native California, this program has done wonders to extend the lives of poor children. The more than $800 billion Paul Ryan is proposing to cut from Medicaid will seriously gut this program and put at risk the livelihoods of millions of poor children around the country.

Under the Ryan plan Medicaid would see serious changes that could transfer the entire burden of caring for these Americans in need to states who are already dealing with huge budgetary issues themselves. This move would destroy minority communities. According to a 2010 Medicaid study, this program was made up of 57% of people of color, and 45% of all minority children are also covered by the program.

Finally the last area worth focusing on in Paul Ryan’s budget is his unserious and dangerous cuts to education and worker training. At a time when far too many employers are saying that the American future work force is unprepared to compete in a worldwide economy, Rep. Ryan is proposing to cut $800 billion when we badly need more investment. Young people in America are expected to compete with their peers in China and India, both of whom are making record investments in education. Paul Ryan would put us further behind in that arena but delving serious blows to proven programs that work like Pell Grants and especially Head Start.

More than 60% of all children in Head Start programs are minorities. The proposed Ryan cuts would demolish one of the most effective education programs succeeding at closing the achievement gap between white children and their peers of color.

President Obama has proposed a responsible budget that pays down our debt while maintaining investments in our future through a tax structure that ensures we all pay our share. Republicans in Congress however are completely concerned with tax cuts for the wealthy, and continuing to build up the military industrial complex by growing the already out-of-control defense budget. With an unemployment rate of upwards of 20% in many minority communities, we can ill afford to see the more cuts to job training programs that help lift entire communities out of poverty the Ryan budget delivers. Republicans will tell you these cuts are necessary to help grow the economy, they are not. They are using these cuts to help those who don’t need it.

Going into the presidential election of 2012 Americans will have a clear choice to make, do we invest in our people, protect our needy, and grow our economy under the theme an “America Built to Last”, or do we break our promises with middle class and poor families to protect tax cuts that the wealthy don’t want, don’t need, and shouldn’t have?

Key Facts About the President’s Bill

1. Tax cuts to small businesses who either give raises or hire new people.

2. Fix 35,000 American schools

3. Fund badly needed transportation projects, including the dozens of bridges right here in Maryland that are in need of repair.

4. Rehabbing homes in hard hit foreclosure areas such as Baltimore City and Prince George’s County, two of the hardest hit in America.

5. Put thousands of teachers back to work in our classrooms teaching our children to win the future. As South Korea rushes to hire new teachers we are rushing to lay ours off.

6. Give tax credits to companies that hire veterans who have risked their lives overseas but come home to only have to now fight for a job.

7. Provide hundreds of thousands of summer jobs to young people while at the same time reducing crime rates in our inner cities. The best crime prevention plan is always a jobs plan.

8. A $4,000 tax credit to companies who hire people who have been unemployed for 6 months to get long term unemployed people back to work.

Young Democrats Praise Recent Immigration News

Yesterday supporters of a comprehensive immigration policy that is both tough and humane received two important announcements. As Congress continues to be locked in bitter partisan gridlock that prevents the entire nation from moving forward to fully reform our immigration laws, states like Maryland and local communities like Montgomery County are doing the right thing by allowing young people brought to this country by no fault of their own to continue to achieve their dreams. This is why the Young Democrats of Maryland were proud to support the Maryland DREAM Act and look forward to defending it on the ballot next fall. It is also why we applaud yesterday’s decision by the Circuit Court of Montgomery to dismiss a suit brought by out-of-state interest group Judicial Watch to bring down the progressive in-state-tuition program at Montgomery College.

In bringing their lawsuit Judicial Watch claimed that the long-standing program cost the county and taxpayers, but that was contradicted by an independent study that said instead of imposing additional taxes on Montgomery County residents, the policy actually saved the county money.

We also applaud President Barack Obama on his announcement yesterday that his administration would use “prosecutorial discretion” on the more than 300,000 open cases of deportation and categorize them from low to high priority. His decision to have those identified as low priority cases dropped represents the realistic approach to leadership on this issue we need. By taking this step undocumented immigrants who have no criminal backgrounds will be able to continue seeking to become documented.

As the president announced this decision yesterday, his administration noted that this is the first in a series of actions they plan to take in search for a more comprehensive policy around immigration. The target group of people who will make up the low priority cases are those who have no criminal history and instead are students, veterans who have served their country and spouses of those who are serving now.

These steps taken by the Obama administration have to only be the start of a larger conversation around immigration that we, the Young Democrats of Maryland, feel is suited for the floors of both the House of Representatives and Senate.

Enough, It is time for Maryland Young Republicans to Join the Young Democrats and Demand a Debt Deal

At noon today the House of Representatives adjourned for the weekend without getting their work done. By six o’clock today Republican Speaker John Beohner had walked away from serious talks to not only lift the debt ceiling of the United States but take serious cuts to our long-term deficit that have been ignored by both Democrats and Republicans for decades.

In 2005 a close friend of mine told me the news he had been infected with the HIV virus. I remember hearing the news in my car one night outside his home and not knowing what to do. Six days later I decided to take control of my own life and get tested because if it could infect him, I knew it could infect me as well. Since then every six months I have regularly been tested for HIV/AIDS and often use days like today, National HIV testing day, as the best time to get tested.

National HIV testing day was created by the National Association of People With AIDS in 1995 in response to the steady growth of the disease in marginalized communities. NAPWA noticed at the time that the spread was reaching epidemic stages, especially in communities of color and men, as well as middle class areas where according to NAPWA their response often was, “it doesn’t’ happen here.” NAPWA understood that everyone needed to know their status if they were truly going to take control of their lives and to know people needed to take the test at least once a year.

Today at community health centers all over the region people will be able to walk in unannounced and get tested. Celebrating Juneteenth but remembering work still to be done

On September 22, 1862 President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and announced it would be effective on January 1, 1863. Since most slaves lived in states still controlled by the confederation it had little impact on the lives of most slaves until June 18^th and June 19^th of 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger marched 2,000 federal troops into Galveston, Texas and took possession of the state enforcing the emancipation. On June 19^th the general stood from the balcony of the city’s Ashton Villa and read the contents of “General Order No. 3.”

Today and tomorrow throughout much of Maryland and the entire country, hundreds of thousands of American’s will celebrate this day which began the process of changing our country and moving it toward a more just and free society. Today, 146 years later, more African-Americans and people of color are graduating from colleges of higher education than ever before. The number of people of color serving their communities at the local, state, and even federal levels are unmatched than at any time in our history. It is easy to look at the today in relationship to our country from that day and not realize that the progress we’ve made must not be the end but is only the very beginning of the society we all hope to create.

The Young Democrats of Maryland today are honored to celebrate this annual tradition and use it as an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to a more just society of economic empowerment, educational opportunity, equality for all, and the very American goal of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

“Our generation was profoundly impacted by the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and on this night, our thoughts and prayers are once again extended to the victims and their families. The death of Osama bin Laden is an important step in our country’s search for healing.

William Donald Schaefer, a man all young dems will mourn

When I was born in 1986 William Donald Schaefer was about to leave the Baltimore City Hall. I was in elementary school when he was preparing to leave the governor's office in Maryland but when I arrived here in Prince George's County he was one of the first statewide politicians I met. This maybe why I was shocked and saddened to hear about his death last week and even more why today as he lies in state in Annapolis I like so many other Marylanders will mourn his life and his service.

As a kid interested in politics at a young age, Donald Schaefer was the type of politician I loved to learn about. A big man with an even bigger personality Donald Schaefer knew the proper role that government could play in the lives of its citizens and even more, how if used correctly it could direct meaningful investments that pave the way for better communities in the future. In the 1980's as large manufacturing companies moved out of Baltimore and the unemployment rate started to rise, then-mayor Schaefer fought hard for public investment in building a new tourism industry that today is the city's second largest industry bringing in more than $450 million in tax revenue. Schaefer knew then what a lot of right-wing republicans today would do good to learn, the right investments by government can and often do pay huge dividends in the end.

Not many people can say they have given fifty years of their life to anything or anyone. Over the longevity of his service to this state, Governor Donald Schaefer always understood that when you are doing the right things for the right people you always end up coming out on the right side of an issue. He will be missed by many Marylanders and leaves very big shoes to be filled.

Health Care Reform, One Year Later

A year ago the United State Congress passed the Affordable Care Act. This legislation is so important to the young people of Maryland and Prince George’s County. The law allows young adults to stay on their parents’ health insurance until age 26. This translates to 25,700 young adults in Maryland now having health care. The law also encourages preventive care and now 701,000 residents in Maryland who have Medicare can now receive free preventive services. A repeal of this legislation would increase the federal deficit by one trillion dollars over the next twenty years which members of my generation will have to pay. This is counter to the promises that the Republicans made to lower the national debt. In these tough economic times we need to remember our elected officials who voted to help young adults save money in health coverage and access to preventive services.

When we celebrated the passage of historic health care reform earlier this year, there were many much-needed new laws to celebrate. Allowing young adults to stay on their families' health insurance plans longer, stopping insurance companies from denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions, reigning in costs - these are all essential policies that will help families across the country. While there's been much discussion of these aspects of reform, I want to go a little more in depth about one of my favorite provisions of the bill: menu labeling! That's right, thanks to health care reform, fast food chains (with more than 20 locations) will soon be required to post how many calories are in each item right on the menu! While this may seem like a minor policy change, I think it is a key step in re-framing how Americans think about fast food...

Will Obama do the Christian thing and protect LGBT from Christian Prayer Breakfast?

I can't recall the number of times I had to defend Obama for his inaction on LGBT issues. During the campaign, many were divided between Hillary and Barack. Hill-dog was beloved by the community and seen as a great advocate for minority rights. Barack had past legal briefings where he wrote his support for LGBT equality when it related to his time as a lawyer. Both attended the first forum focused on LGBT issues hosted by Logo and were top performers. I preferred Kucinich and Gravel's statements since I am a crazy left winger...

The Time for Bi-Partisanship is Over

I am one of the biggest fans of bi-partisanship. I’m not just saying that in the typical way that people in politics always do, rather it’s something I truly believe in. In undergrad, I co-founded a nonpartisan organization on advocacy for higher education issues and was a member of another nonpartisan organization. Some of my best friends are Republicans and I truly do believe that most people in politics, Democrat or Republican are involved because of a need to serve the greater good and make a change in people’s lives. In the case of healthcare insurance reform however, partisanship will be the only way we can move forward and make a necessary change...

Chicago Wrap-Up and Awards Update

After 4 fun-filled days in Chicago at the YDA National Convention, it's back to the grindstone for me and everyone else in the Maryland delegation. Chicago was chocked full of action, and Maryland was an active force at this year's convention, landing national officer positions and winning awards! Congratulations to Julie Schafer for her election as Secretary of the YDA Disabilities Caucus, Joseph Kitchen for his election to Secretary of the YDA Labor Caucus, and to Sarah Holstine who is the newest chair of the YDA Jewish Caucus and another voice for Maryland of the YDA Executive Committee!..

Hey All,

I'm posting here live from breakfast! Sitting here with Kevin Walling, John Ward, Frank Byrne and Zach Fang talking local poilitics, college involvement and how to make MD even more successful. The convention thus far has been incredible. Yesterday, we heard from Congressman John Conyers, people from the DCCC and OFA, Senator Kristen Gilibrand, candidates for four positions for YDA and others. In addition, we had two members from MD, Joseph Kitchen and Nicole Williams lead panels on religion in politics and local chapter growth respectivelly. We heard issue panels and healthcare and election reform and got to meet people from around the country. We topped the day off with 25 members of the Maryland delegation getting a great dinner at a local pizza place.

Hello world and welcome to the blog for the Prince George's County Young Democrats. Right now I am at the Young Democrats of America National Convention in Chicago. It has been a great time thus far. I got in yesterday afternoon. As I was waiting in line to check into the hotel, former Chairman of the DNC, Howard Dean was also checking in. He was very nice and down to earth. He was the guest speaker at the opening reception last night. Of course the topic was on health care which is the hot topic right now.

The trainings I've attended so far have been particularly helpful to me as a member of a local Young Dem chapter in a rural/suburban area. This morning I had the opportunity to listen to a roundtable on rural and agricultural policy issues. It was interesting to hear about the ways in which my fellow Young Democrats have successfully reached out to voters in traditionally conservative areas...
