Women's Caucus - Third Annual Legislative Shadow Day

The Young Democrats of Maryland Women's Caucus, along with Senator Rona Kramer and Delegate Karen Montgomery, are pleased to invite you to our Third Annual Legislative Shadow Day on March 5, 2008.

For the past two years we've brought young Democratic women together with mentors in the Maryland General Assembly, allowing them to experience a day in the life of an elected official and to make a personal connection with a successful Democratic woman.

This year's event will take place on Wednesday, March 5th in downtown Annapolis. We will attend a meeting of the Women Legislators of Maryland, observe the General Assembly in session, and see what life as an elected official is like behind the scenes. Even if you're not considering running for elected office, this is a great opportunity to become more involved in the political process and make lasting connections. This program is completely free and includes a complimentary lunch. You MUST register ahead of time, as we need time to match you with a mentor.

To sign up or for more information, please contact us at eitherdemocraticdivas@gmail.com or 410-917-4930.

Maryland Matters! Let Your Voice Be Heard!

When Maryland, a relatively small Blue State, moved their primary up to February 12th, nobody thought it would matter. After the huge states involved in "Super" or "Tsunami" Tuesday on February 5th, everyone assumed that the Democratic nominee would be pretty much decided. Lo and behold, Maryland's in play!

Please remember to get out on February 12th to vote. The Youth Revolution is here, and it's here to stay!

Also, don't forget to vote for Convention Delegates! I know there are many Young Dems running to represent their candidate of choice in Denver. This convention will be the most exciting one in the last few decades! Let's help get our peers elected!

The Baltimore Examiner covers the importance of the Chesapeake Primary. Read the article here!

Youth Registration Skyrockets!

MD Democratic Party Succeeds in Restoring Voting Rights and Registering Youth
Dems Get Lion’s Share of 15,200 New 17 year-old Maryland Voters

Annapolis, MD – After working with Maryland’s Democratic leadership and the State Board of Elections to reinstate the 17 year-old vote, registration of eligible 17 year-olds has skyrocketed and the Maryland Democratic Party has won another landslide victory. 68 percent of eligible 17 year-old Primary Election voters chose to register with the Democratic Party. Of the 15, 235 newly registered 17 year-olds, 8,593 are now officially Democrats and 2,604 – either by mistake or choice - did not pick a party affiliation and are not eligible to vote on February 12th.

“We can credit inspiration, energy and the strength of Democratic Party values at a time when our state and our nation need them most. We are thrilled but not surprised to see these numbers among our newest first time voters,” says Michael Cryor, Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party. “Our goal is to carry this momentum into the November General Election among all age groups but specifically with Maryland’s energized young adults. The Maryland Democratic Party is now working to inform and train these young citizens on their civic responsibilities and the many opportunities to get further involved in the election and political process.”

In December, Attorney General Doug Gansler issued a critical decision for the State Board of Elections to reinstate the rights of political parties to invite eligible 17 year-olds to vote in party primaries. At that time there were roughly 3,800 registered 17 year-olds. Of the15,235 newly eligible 17 year-old voters, 8,593 registered as Democrats, 4039 registered Republican and 2604 did not affiliate. A 17 year-old voter must have registered and be 18 years of age on or before the November 4th, 2008 General Election to be eligible to vote in Maryland’s February 12th Primary Election.

Additionally, 17 year-olds account for roughly 40% of all new voters who have registered since January 1, 2008. Of the 25,656 new voters of all ages the Maryland Democratic Party maintained its nearly 3 to 1 advantage in newly registered voters since 2003. 14,521 new voters registered with the Democratic Party. 5,204 registered Republican and once again “independent” voters out registered Republicans.

"It's encouraging to know that so many of our young folks have chosen to let their voices be heard through their right to vote,” said Attorney General Doug Gansler whose December decision on party rights was critical to reinstating the 17 year-old vote. “I firmly believe that if a young person becomes involved in the political process, they will remain actively involved throughout their lives with the issues that directly affect their community and their state."

"I'm thrilled that so many 17 year-olds have made it their priority to participate in this historic and exciting Primary Election by registering to vote,” said Jennifer Kramer, President of the Young Democrats of Maryland. “I strongly encourage all young voters to make their voices heard and vote on February 12th."

“I want to thank Governor O’Malley for his support on this issue, Attorney General Doug Gansler for his quick attention to the issue and, of course, Democratic Senator Jamie Raskin for his continued efforts to ensure voting rights for 17 year-olds,” added Cryor. “We also praise the extraordinary efforts of our Young Democrats of Maryland, our Democratic Central Committees and other groups and organizations of all stripes that joined together with us and worked so hard to inform and register young voters.”

YDM Supports the MDP Delegate Selection Plan for the Democratic National Convention in 2008!

As you may be aware, the Maryland Democratic Party (MDP) recently posted on their website for public comment the draft Delegate Selection Plan for the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. The plan is available for your review at www.mddems.org.

As part of this year's plan, the MDP Rules Committee has suggested an aspirational goal for the inclusion of 13 youth delegates from Maryland to next year's convention. This is a material change from the 2004 Delegate Selection Plan, where no such goal for youth delegates was included. As such, the Young Democrats of Maryland Executive Board is strongly urging adoption of the draft Delegate Selection Plan.

President Jennifer Kramer and Executive Vice-President Stephen Thibodeau, as part of the MDP Affirmative Action Committee and MDP Rules Committee, respectively, worked hard to ensure that the youth provision language was part of this year's draft plan. We are asking you, as a Young Dem or Young Dem supporter, to contact Maya Goines, Executive Director of the MDP, as part of the public comment period to urge adoption of the plan at the next Maryland State Democratic Central Committee meeting on June 16th, 2007.

This is a great step to ensure that youth have a voice in the upcoming Presidential race as well as encourage further participation and inclusion in the Maryland Democratic Party. We are so excited that MDP has taken this step, and our full support for this step should be voiced.

The public comment period runs until June 15th, 2007. Please submit your comments in support of the plan to webdem@mddems.org, or via fax to 410-280-8882.
